The UNFK Way
We Understand the Mechanics. We Coach the Human.
I believe most golfers are capable of playing far better golf than they’re currently playing.
Not because they’re missing some secret swing position.
Not because they need another complicated drill.
And certainly not because they need more things to think about.
But because, somewhere along the way, they’ve lost the freedom to simply swing a golf club.
They’ve accumulated information.
They’ve developed doubts.
They’ve become obsessed with what their body is doing.
And they’ve forgotten how naturally they can move when they stop trying to control everything.
My job is to help bring the best version of your golf swing to the surface.
That’s what UNFK Golf is all about.
And it’s why my approach to coaching might be very different from anything you’ve experienced before.
We Understand the Science. But We Don’t Burden You With It.
The golf swing is an extraordinarily sophisticated movement.
The body rotates, accelerates, stabilizes and responds to forces in ways that are incredibly difficult to consciously control.
And modern biomechanics has given us some fascinating insights into how it all works.
I love that stuff.
But here’s the important distinction.
Understanding how a movement works and knowing how to perform it are two very different things.
At UNFK Golf, we combine an understanding of biomechanics with the science of natural motor learning.
We use that knowledge to help golfers develop skill, rather than asking them to consciously reproduce a long list of body positions.
The hips still rotate.
The ground still contributes.
The wrists still function.
The body still performs all those complicated movements.
But you don’t necessarily need to think about them.
We use science to simplify your job. Not complicate it.
We Use Silence.
This might surprise you.
Sometimes, when I’m coaching, I don’t say anything.
I’ll watch you hit a shot.
And another.
And another.
I might ask a question.
Then I’ll let you get on with it.
Not because I’m distracted.
Not because I don’t know what to say.
But because I’m giving you an opportunity to learn.
Too much coaching can become interference.
A constant stream of instructions, corrections and feedback can leave a golfer waiting to be told what to do next.
I don’t want that.
I want you to experience the movement.
Notice what happens.
Start recognizing patterns.
And discover things for yourself.
Sometimes the best coaching happens when the coach shuts up.
We Challenge What You Believe.
You might have spent twenty years believing you need to keep your head still.
Or that your hips must start the downswing.
Or that you need to take your hands out of the golf swing.
Or that you can’t play good golf until you’ve fixed your technique.
I’ll probably challenge some of those beliefs.
And I won’t always agree with you.
Not because I want to be difficult.
But because the stories golfers tell themselves can become some of their biggest limitations.
I’ve seen golfers who are so convinced their swing is broken that they’ve almost forgotten how to hit a golf ball.
They approach every shot looking for something to fix.
And sometimes the most useful thing I can do is help them see the problem differently.
You can’t discover a better way if you’re unwilling to question the old one.
We Ask Tough Questions.
Don’t be surprised if I ask you questions you haven’t considered before.
What were you actually trying to do?
What did you notice?
Why do you think that shot went there?
What happens when you’re playing your best golf?
Why are you so worried about that particular movement?
And perhaps my favorite:
What would happen if you simply let yourself swing?
I don’t ask these questions to catch you out.
I ask them because your answers tell me a lot about how you approach the game.
And they help you become more aware of what you’re doing.
I could spend an hour telling you what I think.
But I’d much rather help you discover something that changes how you play golf.
Because when you discover something for yourself, you have a better chance of making it your own.
You Do the Work.
Here’s something I want to be very clear about.
I can’t learn golf for you.
I can’t give you a perfect golf swing.
And I can’t magically transfer twenty years of experience into your body during a one-hour session.
You’re going to have to do the work.
You’ll hit shots.
You’ll experiment.
You’ll make mistakes.
You’ll try things that don’t work.
You’ll discover things that surprise you.
And there might be moments when I deliberately leave you alone to figure something out.
That’s not a lack of coaching.
That’s part of the coaching.
My job is to create the conditions for learning.
To give you clear tasks.
To provide useful feedback.
To challenge you when necessary.
And to help you make sense of what you’re experiencing.
Your job is to participate.
To explore.
To pay attention.
And to take responsibility for your own improvement.
Because ultimately, the learning has to belong to you.
We Don’t Manufacture Golf Swings.
This is a big one.
I’m not interested in making your swing look like Rory McIlroy’s.
Or Scottie Scheffler’s.
Or anyone else’s.
You have your own body.
Your own history.
Your own capabilities.
Your own way of moving.
And somewhere inside all of that is a golf swing that can work beautifully for you.
It might not look textbook.
It might not satisfy every biomechanical ideal.
And it might not look particularly pretty on slow-motion video.
But if you can hit the ball effectively, control your shots and play good golf, why would we automatically want to change it?
I don’t want to replace your swing. I want to bring the best version of it to the surface.
That might mean removing unnecessary thoughts.
It might mean giving you a clearer intention.
It might mean changing how you practice.
Or it might mean helping you trust a movement you’re already capable of making.
Of course, sometimes physical limitations or particular problems require a different approach.
But I don’t start with the assumption that your swing needs rebuilding.
I start by looking for what you’re already capable of doing.
And we build from there.
We Coach the Golfer, Not Just the Golf Swing.
A golfer is much more than a collection of body positions.
There’s confidence.
Decision-making.
Expectations.
Attention.
Fear.
Habits.
Practice.
And the ability to perform when something actually matters.
You might have a perfectly functional golf swing on the practice fairway.
But what happens on the first tee?
What happens after three bad holes?
What happens when you’ve got a chance to break 80?
What happens when Billy’s standing beside you with twenty bucks on the line?
That’s golf.
And that’s why our coaching goes beyond swing mechanics.
We want to help you become a better performer.
Someone who can adapt.
Make decisions.
Handle mistakes.
And play the game without constantly searching for technical solutions.
The ultimate goal isn’t to produce a beautiful golf swing. It’s to help you play better golf.
We Want You to Become Independent.
Here’s something that might sound strange coming from someone who makes a living coaching golfers.
I don’t want you to need me forever.
I want you to become increasingly capable of solving your own problems.
I want you to recognize when you’re overthinking.
To understand what helps you play well.
To know how to practice.
To make adjustments without panicking.
And to walk onto the golf course with confidence in your ability to figure things out.
That doesn’t mean you’ll never need coaching again.
Even elite performers benefit from feedback, perspective and accountability.
But there’s a big difference between having a coach who helps you develop and being dependent on someone to constantly fix you.
I’m interested in the first.
Not the second.
So, What Does an UNFK Coaching Session Look Like?
It probably won’t involve an hour-long lecture about your hips, shoulders and wrists.
We might start by talking.
I want to understand your game.
What you’re trying to achieve.
What’s frustrating you.
What happens when you play well.
And what you think is holding you back.
Then we’ll hit some balls.
I’ll observe.
I’ll ask questions.
We’ll experiment.
We might explore the throwing motion that sits at the heart of my approach.
We might challenge a belief you’ve carried around for years.
We might discover that your swing is nowhere near as broken as you thought.
And there will probably be a few laughs along the way.
I won’t promise every session will be easy.
Sometimes learning is uncomfortable.
Sometimes you’ll have to confront an idea you’ve believed for decades.
And sometimes you’ll have to resist the temptation to search for another technical fix.
But everything we do will have a purpose.
To help you develop a golf swing you can trust and a game you can enjoy.
Is UNFK Golf Right for You?
If you’re looking for someone to tell you exactly where to position every part of your body, I might not be your coach.
If you want a collection of drills to rehearse until your swing looks like a tour professional’s, we might see the game differently.
But if you’re tired of overthinking...
If you’ve spent years trying to fix your swing...
If you suspect there’s a better golfer hiding beneath all those instructions...
And if you’re willing to challenge what you believe, experiment and take responsibility for your learning...
Then I’d love to work with you.
Because I believe there’s a very good chance you’re capable of more than you realize.
And I reckon we can have some fun finding out.
We Understand the Mechanics. We Coach the Human.
That’s not just a slogan.
It’s how we approach every golfer.
We respect the science.
We embrace natural learning.
We challenge unnecessary complexity.
And we believe the best coaching doesn’t simply give you more information.
It helps you discover what you’re capable of doing.
That’s the UNFK Way.
